Former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Enugu State, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga has officially returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the move as a “homecoming.”
His defection comes weeks after a series of political engagements, including meetings with PDP leadership and consultations with LP stakeholders in his Isi-Uzo Local Government Area. Despite overtures from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Edeoga’s decision to return to the PDP was sealed after local stakeholders expressed a stronger preference for his rejoining the party.
On Monday, he was formally received at the PDP secretariat in Enugu, where he expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah and party leaders for facilitating his return.
“I want to say that I’m happy to be here. I appreciate the political magnanimity of Governor Mbah. What has happened today is a rare shift in Enugu State politics—one that prioritizes reconciliation over rivalry,” Edeoga stated.
He emphasized that his return was a testament to a new political culture in Enugu, one that moves beyond bitterness and embraces inclusivity.
PDP State Chairman, Hon. Martin Chukwunweike, hailed Edeoga’s return as a strategic victory for the party, affirming that Governor Mbah had prioritized uniting the PDP since assuming office.
“Our number one goal as party leaders is to bring everyone back under one umbrella. Today is a major step in that direction, and with moves like this, the 2027 elections will be a walkover for the PDP in Enugu State,” Chukwunweike said.
Council Chairman of Isi-Uzo, Barr. Obiora Obeagu, also welcomed Edeoga’s decision, calling it a significant moment for both the local government and the state. He highlighted Governor Mbah’s leadership style, which has focused on governance rather than political division, pointing to developmental projects in Isi-Uzo as proof.
“With the smart schools, healthcare centers, and road infrastructure projects happening across Isi-Uzo, the governor has demonstrated that governance is about service, not party lines. It is clear why leaders like Edeoga now see the PDP as the right platform to drive Enugu’s development forward,” Obeagu stated.
Edeoga’s return marks a defining moment in Enugu politics, signaling a shift towards political reconciliation and a stronger PDP ahead of future elections.
