***Formerly Notifies Senator
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has moved to the next phase in the recall process of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, as it prepares to scrutinize the list of signatories submitted by the petitioners.
After initially rejecting the petition due to missing contact details, INEC confirmed on Wednesday that the petitioners have now provided the necessary information, allowing the process to proceed. The senator representing Kogi Central has been formally notified, with copies sent to the Senate leadership and published on the commission’s website.
The key issue now is whether the petition has the backing of more than 50% of registered voters in Kogi Central. If the verification process confirms this threshold, INEC will move to the next legal step, which could include a referendum.
While INEC insists on transparency, political analysts believe the process could spark controversy. Some supporters of Senator Natasha argue that the recall effort is politically motivated, while others see it as a test of Nigeria’s democratic structures.
As INEC embarks on the critical verification process, the coming days will determine whether this recall moves forward or ends as another failed attempt at unseating an elected lawmaker.
