The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s signing of the South-South Development Commission Bill into law but insists that action—not just legislation—will determine its success.

In a statement on Wednesday, PANDEF’s National Chairman, Ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, emphasized that while the new Commission is a major victory for the Niger Delta, its impact will depend on the credibility of its leadership and the Federal Government’s commitment to real development.

“This Commission must not become another bureaucratic structure that fails the people,” PANDEF warned, calling on Tinubu to appoint competent professionals who will drive meaningful progress in infrastructure, environmental restoration, and economic revitalization.

Beyond the development agenda, PANDEF also demanded immediate presidential intervention in the escalating Rivers State political crisis, urging the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his Deputy, and the State Assembly. The group cautioned that prolonged instability in Rivers—a key economic hub—could have severe national implications.

“Mr. President, this is a defining moment. A historic decision has been made, but what happens next will shape the future of the South-South,” PANDEF stated.

The forum reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful engagement but stressed that the Niger Delta cannot afford empty promises. It urged the government to match its words with urgent, strategic action.
