The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Jigawa State Chapter, has strongly condemned the extra-judicial killing of 16 hunters from Kano State in Uromi, Edo State, describing it as a barbaric act that violates human rights and national security.
In a statement issued in Dutse, CAN Chairman Rev. Fr. Maurice Kole Hassan denounced the killings as criminal and unacceptable, urging the Edo State and Federal Governments to ensure justice for the victims.
“This is a crime against humanity and a violation of their fundamental rights to movement and association. Such acts, if unchecked, can undermine national security and unity,” he stated.
He also expressed deep sympathy for the families of the victims and reaffirmed CAN’s commitment to the sanctity of human life.
Rev. Fr. Hassan urged authorities to take swift action in arresting and prosecuting those responsible, emphasizing that justice is essential for peace.
“Peace is impossible without justice. We must promote harmony and peaceful coexistence among all ethnic and religious groups,” he added.
The CAN Chairman also congratulated Muslims in Jigawa and across Nigeria on the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, recognizing the values of fasting, prayer, and charity shared by both Christians and Muslims.
“This festival marks the end of Ramadan, a sacred month of faith and sacrifice. These shared values should strengthen our peaceful coexistence and national unity,” he stated.
He further commended Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, for fostering inclusion, peace, and understanding between Christians and Muslims in the state.
Finally, he called for prayers and calm amid economic hardship and security challenges, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant in defending peace and justice.
