In a major step towards boosting Nigeria’s cashew industry, the Senate has passed for first reading a bill seeking to establish the National Cashew Production and Research Institute in Idah, Kogi East Senatorial District.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho of Kogi East, aims to revolutionize cashew production in Nigeria by improving research, processing, and value-chain development. The proposed institute will serve as a **hub for cashew innovation**, ensuring local production meets **global export standards** while maximizing economic benefits for farmers and investors.
Kogi East is one of Nigeria’s largest cashew-producing regions, with its produce highly sought after worldwide.
Senator Echocho emphasized that cashew farming should not remain a raw material export venture** but instead be transformed into a major revenue-generating sector through local processing and value addition.
“This institute will not only improve the quality of cashew products but also provide direct support to farmers and business owners. It will attract investment, create jobs, and ensure better pricing for cashew farmers, strengthening the economy of Kogi East, Kogi State, and Nigeria at large,” Echocho stated.
