In a groundbreaking move to combat poverty and stimulate economic development, the Katsina State Government has rolled out an ambitious animal rearing program aimed at empowering vulnerable citizens.
Governor Dikko Umar Radda recently launched the initiative, distributing goats to less privileged members of the community as a means of fostering self-reliance and financial independence. The innovative approach has been hailed as a sustainable solution to poverty and unemployment, particularly among women and youth.
A renowned development expert and Administrative Secretary at the Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Dr. Ibrahim Sani Kaita, has described the program as a transformative step toward economic growth. He emphasized that livestock farming has long been a key driver of prosperity in many economies and could serve as a catalyst for Katsina’s progress.
“This initiative is a game-changer. It will not only create jobs but also serve as a foundation for long-term economic empowerment, reducing social vices and ensuring financial security for many families,” Dr. Kaita stated.
He highlighted the global success of livestock programs, referencing India’s livestock sector, which has experienced significant growth and contributed substantially to the nation’s GDP. According to him, Katsina State stands to gain immensely by leveraging animal husbandry as a tool for economic development.
Beyond its financial benefits, the program also supports environmental sustainability, promotes biodiversity, and strengthens agricultural resilience.
However, Dr. Kaita cautioned that challenges such as livestock diseases, feed scarcity, and inadequate policy support must be addressed for the initiative to achieve lasting success.
To ensure sustainability, he urged the government to implement strategic planning, robust stakeholder engagement, and comprehensive veterinary support.
He also pointed out that livestock markets in Africa and the Middle East present lucrative opportunities for Katsina’s farmers, further enhancing the program’s economic potential.
Dr. Kaita commended the initiative, calling it a visionary step toward sustainable economic development. “This program is not just about giving goats—it’s about giving people the means to build a better future. Katsina is setting the stage for a revolution in small-scale farming that could transform countless lives,” he concluded.
