Barely a week after a deadly fuel tanker explosion claimed over 100 lives in Dikko, Gurara Local Government Area, another tragedy has struck Niger State. A powerful explosion at a mining site in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area, on Sunday morning left four people dead and many others injured.

The blast, which occurred as miners resumed work for the day, sent shockwaves through Sabon Pegi and neighboring communities, including New Bussa in Borgu LGA. Panicked residents initially feared the explosion came from the nearby hydroelectric dam, with many fleeing into the bush for safety.

A local source attributed the incident to poor handling of explosive devices used by the mining company operating in the area. “It’s likely the improper use of explosives caused this. The explosion was so loud it shook the entire village,” the source said. “People are afraid to approach the site for fear of more blasts.”

While the area has a history of terrorist activities, the source dismissed any connection to such attacks, emphasizing that mining operations, which have been ongoing in the area for years, are the likely cause.

As of now, no official statement has been issued by the Niger State Government or the State Police Command regarding the explosion.

This latest incident has left communities grappling with fear and uncertainty, raising urgent questions about safety protocols in mining operations across the state.
