***Applauds House of Representatives on bill seeking 70 slots for women

Political office holders across the various political parties in Nigeria should ensure they walk their talks on gender equity, the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has charged.

This was coming as she lauded the House of Representatives for initiating and passing for second reading, the bill seeking for 70 out of the 360 legislative seats for women .
Tinubu who gave the charge in her speech at the spotlight initiative of the ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association (ECOFEPA), held at the alternate Chamber of the Senate, National Assembly, Abuja Monday, said there is a critical need to address and overcome the persistent gender disparities in the Nigerian political systems.
“To fully achieve this across board, we must be seen to walk the talk”, she said .
In doing that she pointed out that the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has taken significant steps to remove financial barriers by making nomination forms for elective positions free at the grassroots level, ensuring that capable and qualified women can participate in the political process without the burden of prohibitive costs.
According to her after years of advocacy without desired results , legally backed enforcement may be put in place in changing the narratives.
She said, “While quotas and education are essential, enforcement of these measures is equally critical. Governments must put in place robust mechanisms to ensure compliance with gender quotas.
“This includes legal frameworks and monitoring systems that hold political parties accountable.
“Constitutional amendments may also be necessary to enshrine gender equity in political representation.
“Such amendments would provide a solid legal foundation for women’s adequate representation, ensuring that gender equity is not just a policy preference but a constitutional mandate.
“The journey towards achieving 30% women representation in our parliament is achievable once we take the bold step to kick start the journey to an enduring democracy of quality representation.
“I commend the Federal House of Representatives for passing the Bill seeking to reserve 74 seats for women in the National Assembly in a bid to encourage more female participation in politics and governance.
‘I believe that the leadership in the Senate is gender-friendly as she urged the 10th National Assembly to give women the necessary support.
“Nigerian women are smart and intelligent and can work alongside our male counterpart, without friction for the good and development of our country”.

By Ahmed Rufa’i, Dutse

Medical experts in Jigawa State have identified community outreach as a highly effective method for promoting family planning and personal hygiene among women in rural and semi-urban areas.

Deputy in Charge and Head of the Antenatal Care Unit at Madobi Primary Healthcare Clinic in Dutse, Hajiya Aisha Bala, disclosed in an interview with National Update.
She noted that outreach efforts have significantly increased the number of women adopting family planning methods and understanding the importance of hygiene.

“Community outreach allows us to engage women directly in their communities, creating a comfortable environment for discussions about family planning and personal hygiene. This approach has yielded impressive results, with more women now recognizing that family planning is their right,” Hajiya Bala said.

She explained that during outreach sessions, women are gathered in the homes of village leaders, where healthcare personnel educate them about the benefits and methods of family planning. This strategy has been particularly beneficial for newly married women who wish to delay childbirth for education or personal reasons.

The outreach campaigns have resulted in a dramatic increase in participation. “On average, we see about 24 to 33 women weekly at our facilities. However, during outreach programs, the number rises to between 100 and 120 women accepting and receiving family planning commodities,” she revealed.

Middle-aged women, aged 24 to 45, are the most receptive to family planning, according to Hajiya Bala. She added that while there are provisions for adolescents as young as 15, these services are not offered locally due to religious considerations.

Hajiya Bala highlighted the need for more resources to sustain and expand outreach efforts, especially in underserved areas. She praised the contributions of non-governmental organizations that have previously supported the program but noted that healthcare workers often take the initiative to continue outreach visits due to high community demand.

“Women frequently request that we return for additional sessions. Their enthusiasm drives us to fulfill these promises, even when resources are limited,” she said.

The outreach initiative has proven essential in empowering women in Jigawa State, fostering healthier communities, and ensuring informed decision-making regarding family planning and hygiene practices.

“Men must respect their spouses for the sacrifices they make in holding the family together,” she said.

The First Lady also called on women and girls to acquire knowledge and entrepreneurial skills to foster self-reliance, as empowerment is a critical tool in the fight against GBV. She noted that campaigns should extend to rural communities, where the prevalence of violence is often higher.

She commended the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her support and commitment to the fight against gender-based violence in Kogi State and across the country.
