Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has sparked fresh political debate ahead of the 2027 general elections after declaring that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi would perform better than President Bola Ahmed Tinubu if elected to lead the country.
Amaechi made the remarks during an interview on Trust TV, where he expressed concern over Nigeria’s current economic and security challenges.
According to him, the rising cost of living, worsening insecurity, and widespread hardship across the country require leaders with competence, national focus, and the ability to strengthen public institutions.
The former minister argued that leadership should not be determined by ethnic or regional sentiments, insisting that Nigerians must place greater emphasis on performance and governance capacity when choosing their leaders.
Amaechi also pointed to his record in public office, particularly his years as governor of Rivers State and later as Minister of Transportation, where he oversaw major rail and infrastructure projects.
His comments have already generated reactions within political circles, with analysts viewing the statement as a significant intervention in the growing conversations surrounding the 2027 presidential race.
The remarks come amid increasing political realignments and early consultations among major political actors ahead of the next general elections.
