The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has endorsed the growing participation of activists, journalists, and civic leaders in Nigeria’s political process, expressing strong support for the 2027 aspirations of Aisha Yesufu, Chiogo Constance Ikokwu, and other credible Nigerians seeking elective offices.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko. HURIWA described the emergence of civic voices in partisan politics as a healthy sign for Nigeria’s democracy, stressing that the country needs leaders with proven integrity, courage, competence, and commitment to public service.
The advocacy organisation said Nigeria can no longer afford leadership driven by patronage and political recycling, insisting that citizens with established records in defending democracy, human rights, accountability, and social justice should be encouraged to take up leadership responsibilities.
According to the group, Aisha Yesufu’s entry into partisan politics represents a significant democratic shift, noting that years of activism against corruption, injustice, abuse of power, and poor governance have positioned her as a symbol of principled civic engagement.
HURIWA stated that individuals who have consistently spoken for ordinary Nigerians and defended democratic ideals deserve opportunities to participate directly in governance and policy making.
The association also applauded Dr. Chiogo Constance Ikokwu for declaring her intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, describing her aspiration as part of a new wave of professionals seeking to redefine public leadership.
HURIWA highlighted Dr. Ikokwu’s media and advocacy background, noting her work with THISDAY Newspapers and ARISE News, where she championed conversations around human rights, women and youth empowerment, peace building, and national unity.
The group urged political parties to embrace internal democracy and create space for credible aspirants with intellectual depth, patriotic commitment, and clear developmental ideas instead of relying on entrenched political structures.
It added that Nigeria’s democratic growth depends largely on the willingness of principled citizens and reform-minded professionals to move beyond criticism and actively participate in governance.
HURIWA further expressed confidence that many Nigerians are increasingly interested in leadership founded on merit, accountability, transparency, and genuine service delivery.
