The battle for the 2027 elections in Jigawa State is already taking shape, and the emergence of youthful politician Aminu Wada Abubakar as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) consensus candidate for the Jigawa South-West Senatorial District signals what many observers describe as a strategic generational shift within the party.
Popularly known as Dokajin Dutse, Aminu Wada Abubakar arrived at the PDP State Secretariat in Dutse accompanied by hundreds of supporters, party loyalists, and youth groups in what quickly turned into a show of political strength and grassroots acceptance.
But beyond the celebration and symbolism, his emergence carries deeper political implications for the PDP in Jigawa State.
At a time when many young Nigerians continue to demand greater inclusion in governance, the PDP appears to be projecting a younger political face in one of the state’s key senatorial districts.
Supporters described the development as a move toward people-focused representation driven by empowerment, education, and economic opportunity rather than traditional elite politics.
Speaking after obtaining his nomination and expression of interest forms, Aminu Wada Abubakar outlined a campaign agenda centered on youth development, women empowerment, agriculture, education, healthcare, and economic self-reliance.
According to him, Northern Nigeria can no longer afford leadership that ignores unemployment, poverty, and the growing frustrations among young people.
“What is happening today requires leaders who will prioritise empowerment, education, and economic development,” he declared.
He promised to support policies that would improve agricultural productivity, create employment opportunities for youths, strengthen women participation in the economy, and encourage skills acquisition across communities in the senatorial district.
The young PDP candidate also spoke extensively about rural development, insisting that community-based programmes and improved healthcare services would form a key part of his legislative priorities if elected in 2027.
Political observers say his emergence reflects the continuing influence of former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, within the PDP structure in the state. Aminu openly acknowledged Lamido’s mentorship and political guidance, describing the former governor as a father figure whose support has remained instrumental.
“I appreciate the support, mentorship, encouragement, and fatherly guidance of Baba Alhaji Sule Lamido,” he said.
The emergence of Aminu Wada Abubakar also revives a notable political lineage in Northern Nigeria. His late father, Alhaji Wada Abubakar, served as Deputy Governor to Governor Sabo Bakin Zuwo in the old Kano State under the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) during the Second Republic.
For many within the PDP, the development represents an attempt to combine political legacy with youthful energy ahead of what is expected to be an intense 2027 contest in Jigawa State.
The candidate expressed confidence that the PDP remains strong enough to challenge the ruling APC in the state, insisting that the opposition party is reorganising and reconnecting with grassroots supporters.
With political alignments gradually taking shape ahead of 2027, Aminu Wada Abubakar’s emergence may mark the beginning of a broader youth-driven political conversation in Jigawa South-West—one that could test whether the electorate is ready to embrace a new generation of leadership.
