Former Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has pledged to turn the concerns of ordinary people into laws and policies that improve their lives, as he intensifies his bid for the Jigawa South-West senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

Abba, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the district, made the promise during his campaign flag-off in Gwaram, Jigawa State, where he called for purposeful leadership and effective representation.

He said his ambition was to ensure that the needs of his constituents received attention at the National Assembly, stressing that political representation must go beyond occupying public office to delivering meaningful benefits.

“By God’s grace, we will continue to work towards these goals. When we get to the relevant institutions and legislative assemblies, we will sponsor and pursue laws and policies that serve the interests of our people and the nation,” he said.

The former police chief urged supporters to remain committed to the democratic process, emphasising perseverance, collective responsibility and the need for leaders to remain connected to the people they represent.

His campaign places people-centred legislation at the heart of his senatorial ambition, with security, education, healthcare, agriculture and youth employment among the issues likely to shape expectations of his proposed representation.

Abba’s transition from policing to elective politics marks a new phase in his public service career. Having served as Inspector-General of Police, he brings experience in law enforcement and public administration to the contest.

However, his challenge will be to demonstrate how that experience can translate into effective lawmaking and practical solutions to the problems confronting residents of Jigawa South-West.

For many constituents, effective representation means more than campaign promises. It requires lawmakers to sponsor relevant bills, scrutinise government spending, conduct oversight and advocate policies that improve access to public services and economic opportunities.

Agriculture is particularly important to rural communities, where farming supports livelihoods and local economic activity. Improved rural infrastructure, access to agricultural support and better market opportunities are among the issues that could feature in the district’s development priorities.

Education, healthcare and youth unemployment are also concerns that candidates will be expected to address with clear proposals.

Abba’s pledge to pursue legislation in the public interest therefore raises questions about the specific bills, policies and oversight priorities he would pursue if elected.

His campaign will need to show how proposed interventions could address local needs and how their impact would be assessed.

As the 2027 elections approach, the former IGP faces the task of convincing voters that his experience and legislative agenda align with their expectations.

Ultimately, his promise to take the people’s concerns to the Senate will be judged by the clarity of his proposals and his ability to translate them into effective representation if given the mandate.
