With poor eyesight posing a potential danger on Nigerian roads, BATMEDICS has sponsored free eye screening, medications and corrective surgeries for about 500 commercial drivers and motorists in Abuja.
The intervention, organised in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps, was held on Thursday at the Abuja Medical Store beside Jabi Park to mark the 2026 World Sight Day.
Beyond routine screening, the programme covered prescription medications and corrective eye surgeries for beneficiaries diagnosed with severe visual impairments.
Director-General of BATMEDICS, Ojeje Onimisi, said the initiative was designed to address healthcare needs among professional drivers whose vision is critical to their daily work.
He said drivers needed regular eye examinations to ensure they could safely manage the demands of navigating busy roads.
According to him, BATMEDICS would fund required medications and critical eye surgeries for beneficiaries needing further treatment.
Representing the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, the Assistant Corps Marshal in charge of Special Duties and External Relations, Ibrahim M. Bazama, said good eyesight was essential for recognising road signs, spotting pedestrians and responding to traffic hazards.
Bazama described the exercise as a preventive measure that could help identify vision problems before they contributed to road crashes.
BATMEDICS also urged motorists not to ignore blurred vision, night blindness and persistent eye strain, noting that such symptoms warranted medical attention.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the programme, saying it had provided access to eye care services they might otherwise have struggled to afford.
They also commended Seyi Tinubu, whom they credited with supporting the intervention.
The organisation said the exercise formed part of its broader healthcare initiatives targeting groups whose occupations expose them to particular health risks.
