The management of CAPITAL POST has mourned the death of Danusa Ocholi, News Editor of Daily Asset Newspaper, describing him as a journalist whose professionalism and mentorship left a lasting mark on the newsroom.
Publisher and CEO of CAPITAL POST, Pastor Atekojo Samson Usman, said Ocholi remained committed to journalism ethics at a time when financial inducement had become a concern in the profession.
Usman, in a statement on Tuesday, recalled working with Ocholi during the formative years of Daily Asset, describing the late editor as a “complete gentleman” who consistently encouraged younger journalists to uphold professional standards.
He said Ocholi played a significant role in shaping his approach to journalism and specifically guided him on the need to maintain editorial independence and ethics when CAPITAL POST commenced operations in 2000.
According to Usman, Ocholi was known for making editorial decisions based on professional judgment and the realities of issues rather than financial considerations.
“The news of Danusa Ocholi’s death was heartbreaking to me. This is a journalist who was a complete professional and never got swayed by financial inducement in his choice of editorial contents,” he said.
Usman added that Ocholi mentored several journalists and remained committed to strengthening professional standards in the newsroom.
He said the late editor’s death had created a gap that would be difficult to fill, while extending his condolences to Daily Asset, journalists across the country and Ocholi’s immediate family.
Beyond mourning the veteran journalist, Usman used the occasion to raise concerns about the welfare and health of journalists.
He called on media proprietors and the Nigeria Union of Journalists to make health insurance coverage compulsory for journalists, arguing that improved welfare would help protect media workers and address their healthcare needs.
He prayed for the repose of Ocholi’s soul and for God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss.
