Social commentator, VeryDarkMan, has berated Benue youths for mobilising in large numbers to disrupt Peter Obi’s recent visit to the state, challenging them to deploy the same energy against the bandits and terrorists attacking their communities.
VDM said it was painful to see youths who had endured years of killings, attacks and insecurity demonstrate such strong mobilisation against a political figure while, in his view, failing to show the same determination in demanding an end to the violence ravaging the state.
“If Benue youths can come out in numbers to chase somebody, tomorrow when bandits or terrorists attack, we know say una get squad wey sabi chase,” he said.
Reacting to videos of the incident shared on social media, VDM said he was initially impressed by the youths’ ability to mobilise, but became disappointed when he considered what the same collective strength could achieve if directed towards protecting their communities and demanding accountability from government.
He also questioned why youths who protested after the Yelwata massacre were allegedly dispersed with tear gas, while a large crowd was able to gather during Obi’s visit.
VDM accused politicians of exploiting the frustrations of Benue youths for political purposes, urging them not to allow themselves to become instruments in political battles.
He said the incident should instead serve as a reminder of the power Benue youths possess when they act collectively, adding that such energy should be directed towards demanding security, good governance and protection for their communities.
