The Northern Senators Forum (NSF) has condemned the attack on Kpenya Mosque and the communities of Gidan-Zana and Kpenya in Dekara District, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The forum demanded the immediate and safe release of all abducted persons.
The Chairman of the forum Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua in a statement on wednesday said it was deeply saddened by the attack, which reportedly occurred on Friday, August 22, 2026, and resulted in the abduction of hundreds of worshippers and residents.
Yar’Adua commiserated with the government and people of Niger State, particularly families of those abducted and those reportedly killed in the attack.
He described the targeting of worshippers and rural communities as “cowardly” and an attack on the shared values of humanity and faith.
The NSF expressed particular concern over reports that landmines had been planted in the affected areas and that some abducted persons could be used as bargaining chips.
The forum urged the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and other security agencies to intensify rescue operations and secure the immediate release of the victims.
It also called on the Federal Government to provide urgent relief, medical assistance and additional security personnel to affected communities in Borgu and other vulnerable border areas.
Yar’Adua further urged the government to undertake a comprehensive review of the security architecture in Niger State and the wider North-Central region to prevent similar attacks.
“The Northern Senators Forum stands in full solidarity with the people of Niger State. We reaffirm our commitment to work with the Presidency and state governments to restore peace, protect lives and uphold the dignity of our people across Northern Nigeria and the country at large,” he said.
