The National Assembly of Nigeria on Tuesday commissioned a 22-rapporteur capacity ultra-modern newsroom, marking the digitalisation of its Information Department for real-time news monitoring, breaking and dissemination by trained reporters.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Barrister Kamoru Ogunlana, described the unveiling as more than the launch of a facility, saying it reaffirms the legislature’s commitment to institutional growth, efficiency and excellence.
“This newsroom is a strategic investment designed to strengthen information management, improve documentation of legislative activities, and enhance public engagement,” he said.
“In an era where communication defines credibility, this facility positions the National Assembly to project its work with professionalism and transparency.”
Ogunlana stressed that the digitalised studio is not merely an infrastructure project but part of a broader agenda to build capacity and motivate excellence within the system.
According to him, the ongoing modernisation of infrastructure within the National Assembly complex is gradually transforming it into a centre that reflects the dignity and importance of democratic governance on the global stage.
“With facilities such as the chapel, mosque, library, hospital, printing press, and now this state-of-the-art newsroom, we are gradually transforming this complex into more than a legislative hub,” he said.
“We are shaping it into a symbol of institutional strength and a destination of interest, a place that reflects the dignity and importance of democratic governance.”
The Clerk, however, cautioned management and staff on the need for proper maintenance of the facilities being provided.
“If we preserve our assets, we preserve our progress,” he stated.
Earlier in his welcome address, Secretary of the Research and Information Directorate, Dr. Barde Umoru, said the ultra-modern newsroom was conceived as a strategic communication hub to enhance transparency, accountability and public engagement in Nigeria’s democratic process.
“A modern parliament must not only work, it must be seen to work. It must communicate clearly, accurately and responsibly,” he said.
He explained that the newsroom would play critical roles in advancing the communication mandate of the legislature, including ensuring real-time monitoring of plenary proceedings and strategic communication.
According to him, the facility will closely track debates, motions, resolutions and oversight engagements in both chambers, helping to document and disseminate legislative activities promptly and accurately.
He added that the newsroom would also help combat misinformation and strengthen public trust in the legislative institution.
The commissioning marks another milestone in the National Assembly’s effort to modernise its operations and reposition its communication architecture in line with global parliamentary standards.
