The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has introduced a stringent new verification requirement for prospective corps members, declaring that no graduate will be mobilised for the mandatory one-year national service without clearance from the National Electronic Registration Database (NERD).
The directive, announced in a public notice on the scheme’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, marks a significant tightening of the NYSC’s mobilisation process as authorities move to enhance the credibility and integrity of the national service programme.
“This is to inform Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) that without NERD clearance, there will be no NYSC. Get your NERD clearance early. Avoid delays in your mobilisation,” the scheme stated.
Emphasising the policy, the NYSC added: “NERD clearance is compulsory for all PCMs. No NERD clearance, No NYSC.”
While the scheme did not elaborate on the operational details of the new clearance procedure, the announcement leaves no doubt that NERD verification has become a non-negotiable prerequisite for mobilisation.
The new requirement comes as the NYSC intensifies preparations for the 2026 Batch ‘B’ service year, with tertiary institutions, graduates and other stakeholders racing to complete registration and documentation ahead of the orientation exercise.
The development also follows a series of reforms by the scheme aimed at strengthening both the integrity of the mobilisation process and the safety of corps members.
Only recently, the NYSC cautioned prospective corps members against travelling to orientation camps at night, citing persistent security concerns across parts of the country.
It advised intending corps members to suspend their journeys where necessary and pass the night in secure locations, including military formations and other recognised security facilities, instead of risking late-night travel.
The latest directive signals the NYSC’s determination to tighten identity verification, eliminate irregularities in mobilisation and ensure that only properly cleared graduates participate in the national service programme.
With mobilisation for the next batch gathering momentum, prospective corps members have been urged to complete all registration, verification and NERD clearance requirements well ahead of the orientation exercise to avoid disqualification or last-minute setbacks.
