A shocking incident has left one police officer dead and another critically injured after an internal shooting within the Rivers State Police Command on Monday, raising urgent questions about firearm management and discipline among officers.
Inspector Victor Okus, attached to the 17 Police Mobile Force (PMF) and on special duty at Intels Logistics Company, Onne, has been arrested for allegedly opening fire on his colleagues during a joint security operation with military personnel at Next Cash and Carry Supermarket, Trans Amadi, around 1:20 p.m. on January 18.
The deceased, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, of 14 PMF, Yola, sustained gunshot wounds to the head and neck and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Another officer, also shot during the incident, is receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility. Sani’s remains have been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.
According to CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Command spokesperson, Okus is currently in custody and will face an orderly room trial to determine his motives. He may later be formally charged in court if found culpable. The weapon reportedly used, a Beretta pistol, was purchased for N30,000.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, called for a full and transparent investigation, stressing that officers must exercise extreme caution and responsibility when handling firearms. “Professionalism and discipline are non-negotiable. Incidents like this are preventable and highlight the need for stricter oversight,” Adepoju said.
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the local law enforcement community and the public, underscoring growing concerns about internal security protocols and the safe handling of weapons by police personnel on duty. Analysts note that such incidents, though rare, can erode public confidence in policing and emphasize the urgent need for better training and accountability measures within the force.
As the investigation continues, authorities are appealing for calm and cooperation among officers and citizens while stressing that justice will be pursued for the deceased officer and support provided to the injured.
