National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, has declared that the party has emerged as Nigeria’s leading opposition force, attributing its rapid rise to the support of Nigerians committed to safeguarding the country’s multi-party democracy.
In a statement posted on his verified X account on Thursday, the former Bayelsa State governor thanked supporters across Bayelsa State, the Niger Delta and the Nigerian diaspora for their steadfast support during what he described as a critical phase in Nigeria’s political development.
Dickson disclosed that he had stayed away from Bayelsa for about eight months after attending the funeral of a former deputy governor in January, dedicating the period to building the NDC into a national political movement.
According to him, the party was established through the collective efforts of Nigerians from diverse political, ethnic and regional backgrounds, including its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and vice-presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
He said the growing acceptance of the NDC reflected Nigerians’ desire for a credible opposition capable of strengthening democratic competition and providing an alternative platform for governance.
“The NDC has become the principal opposition platform because Nigerians desire a credible alternative that is committed to constitutional democracy, justice and accountable leadership,” he said.
Dickson also alleged that some politicians he had mentored had turned state institutions against him, accusing them of orchestrating years of political intimidation, propaganda and harassment. He, however, expressed confidence that the judiciary would uphold the Constitution and resist attempts to politicise the justice system.
“The survival of our multi-party democracy depends on institutions that are guided by the Constitution and the rule of law,” he stated.
The former governor announced plans to return to Bayelsa soon alongside the NDC National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, to appreciate party supporters who remained loyal throughout his prolonged absence.
He urged Nigerians, particularly women and young people, to reject violence, intimidation and divisive politics, stressing that elections should be contested on the basis of ideas, competence and accountability.
Dickson further called on citizens to use the ballot box to hold leaders accountable, insisting that sustainable political change could only be achieved through peaceful democratic participation.
Reflecting on his political journey, he said he had survived numerous political challenges over the past two decades, including investigations and sustained efforts to diminish his political influence, but remained committed to public service.
He reaffirmed his determination to build the NDC into a formidable national platform anchored on constitutionalism, transparent governance, credible elections and the rule of law, maintaining that Nigeria’s democracy would be stronger with a vibrant and effective opposition.
