Fear spread across the University of Jos (UniJos) on Tuesday after the body of a man was discovered on the institution’s permanent campus, prompting heightened security and an investigation into the incident.
The deceased, believed to be a local farmer who cultivated land within the university environment, was found dead on farmland located on the campus.
University authorities confirmed that the victim was neither a student nor a member of staff, dismissing speculation that the incident involved anyone within the institution’s academic community.
Chief Security Officer of the university, Agama Tangni, said preliminary findings suggest the victim may have been deliberately targeted while heading to his farm in the early hours of Tuesday.
He explained that the deceased was a familiar face on the campus because of his regular farming activities in the area.
Tangni said the victim’s family had been informed and the remains were evacuated to the Bingham University Teaching Hospital.
He added that the university management had activated internal security measures and would continue to update the campus community as investigations progress.
Following the incident, the university deployed additional security personnel across the permanent site to reassure students and staff and prevent any security breach.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the killing.
