The Labour Party has described the 2026 Arthur Svensson International Prize awarded to Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Comrade Joe Ajaero as global recognition of the resilience of Nigeria’s labour movement and its long-running campaign for workers’ rights and social justice.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party said Ajaero’s honour in Oslo, Norway, extends beyond personal achievement, symbolising international acknowledgement of the sacrifices made by Nigerian workers and organised labour.
According to the party, Ajaero’s emergence as the first Nigerian labour leader to receive the prestigious award highlights more than three decades of advocacy for fair wages, democratic freedoms and improved welfare for workers.

The Labour Party said the recognition reinforces the historic and constitutional ties between the party and the organised labour movement, stressing that both institutions share a common commitment to equity, justice and the protection of workers’ interests.
It praised Ajaero’s leadership during periods of economic uncertainty and his consistent opposition to policies considered detrimental to workers, describing his stewardship of the NLC as courageous and principled.
The party expressed optimism that the international honour would strengthen Ajaero’s resolve to continue championing labour rights and advancing the struggle for social and economic justice in Nigeria.
Congratulating the NLC president on the achievement, the Labour Party said the award belongs not only to Ajaero but also to millions of Nigerian workers whose aspirations he has represented over the years.
