The pupils and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending nearly two months in captivity.

Their release on Friday sparked emotional celebrations as family members, residents and well-wishers welcomed them home. Videos circulating on social media captured tearful reunions and scenes of jubilation, ending weeks of uncertainty over the victims’ fate.

The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen stormed Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, L.A. Primary School and Community Grammar School in Esiele. During the attack, one teacher was killed, while several pupils and teachers were abducted and taken into the Old Oyo National Park.

The incident drew widespread outrage nationwide, with parents, traditional rulers, community leaders and civil society organisations demanding urgent action to secure the victims’ release.

Security agencies subsequently launched sustained rescue operations, while the Oyo State Government repeatedly assured residents that efforts were ongoing to bring the abductees back safely.

Although the victims have now regained their freedom, authorities have yet to explain the circumstances surrounding their release or confirm whether any suspects have been arrested in connection with the abduction.

Security officials are expected to provide further details as investigations continue.
