The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of seven members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in a fatal road accident involving an NUJ bus in Gombe State, while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The lone crash occurred on Monday evening as the journalists were returning from a wedding ceremony held in Gombe South Senatorial District. The victims were part of an NUJ delegation that had travelled to celebrate a colleague, an employee of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), who was getting married.
Confirming the incident in a telephone interview, the Gombe State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Samson Kaura, disclosed that a total of 11 persons were involved in the crash.
According to him, seven occupants died on the spot, while the remaining four were rescued with injuries and taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The tragic incident has cast a pall over the journalism community in Gombe State and beyond, turning what was meant to be a moment of joy and celebration into one of profound grief.
Further details on the cause of the accident were not immediately available as investigations by the FRSC are ongoing.
