Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Comrade Timi Frank, has raised an alarm over what he describes as a coordinated attempt by the Presidency to endanger and possibly eliminate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Frank said the abrupt withdrawal of all police officers assigned to Atiku, a privilege guaranteed by law for former Vice Presidents, is unprecedented and deeply suspicious.
According to the ULMWP Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East:
“Since 2007, no administration—no matter the political climate—has ever touched Atiku Abubakar’s security. Why now? Why when insecurity is spiraling nationwide? This move is too calculated to be a coincidence.”
He dismissed the government’s claim of a nationwide withdrawal of VIP security as a deceptive cover, insisting that Atiku is the primary target.
“This so-called blanket directive is nothing but camouflage. The intention is to isolate Atiku and create the perfect vulnerability for an attack. His legal entitlement to police protection hasn’t changed—only the government’s motives have.”
Frank argued that the development fits a growing pattern in parts of Africa, where incumbents weaponize state institutions to neutralize political opponents.
“President Tinubu is adopting the same tactics we’ve seen elsewhere on the continent—intimidation, silencing, and in extreme cases, elimination of opposition leaders. Atiku has been a loud critic of this administration, and this withdrawal of his security is clearly retaliatory.”
He also alleged that the structure of the current security leadership, heavily populated by individuals loyal to the President, appears designed to carry out political orders without resistance.
“The concentration of key security positions within the President’s ethnic circle is no accident. These appointments were made for moments like this.”
Frank urged Nigerians and major global actors—the U.S., U.K., African Union, and ECOWAS—to pay urgent attention to what he described as a dangerous escalation.
“The world must take note. We’ve seen this pattern before: security is withdrawn, then tragedy strikes. If anything happens to Atiku Abubakar, the responsibility lies squarely on this government.”
He challenged the Presidency to prove that the withdrawal is truly universal:
“If this directive is genuine, let the President’s family, associates, and top appointees also lose their police protection. But we all know this isn’t about policy—it’s about Atiku.”
Frank concluded with a warning that Nigeria is approaching a democratic breaking point.
“The country is sliding into dangerous territory. Any harm to Atiku—or any opposition figure—could trigger a national crisis. The international community must not wait for the worst before acting.”
