Atiku’s Exit Marks Turning Point for PDP Renewal — Fix PDP Group

A reformist group within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Fix PDP, Fix Nigeria, has described the resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the party as a necessary step toward rebuilding and repositioning the PDP as a truly national and people-oriented platform.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Abubakar Muktar, a coordinator of the group in Katsina State, the group welcomed Atiku’s decision, stating that his long-standing pursuit of personal ambition has hindered internal unity, generational inclusion, and strategic renewal within the party.
“From 2015, when he joined forces against former President Goodluck Jonathan, to 2023 when he disregarded the zoning principle, Atiku’s actions have consistently undermined the PDP’s internal cohesion,” Muktar said.
The group noted that Atiku’s departure, along with that of his 2023 running mate, marks an opportunity for the party to “reset, reorganize, and open the doors to younger, visionary leaders committed to collective progress—not personal ambition.”
“Even as a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has never played a consistent leadership role in building the PDP. On the contrary, his political choices have fueled the party’s fragmentation,” the statement added.
Fix PDP called on PDP youths and loyal party members across Nigeria to rise to the occasion and begin a new chapter of inclusive leadership, policy-driven politics, and ideological clarity.
The group also commended PDP governors who declined to support Atiku’s recent political coalition, saying their stance signals “a principled commitment to the future of the party, not recycled ambitions.”
“Let it be clear: the PDP belongs to the people, not to any one man. If we are serious about building a better Nigeria, we must begin by fixing the PDP from within.”
The group concluded by urging party organs and stakeholders to prioritize unity, fairness, and fresh leadership as the foundation for the PDP’s revival ahead of 2027.
