Umo Eno Returns to Honour Teacher Nearly 50 Years After Leaving Classroom

Nearly five decades after leaving the classroom, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has returned to honour a teacher whose lessons remained part of his life long after his school days ended.

The governor’s visit to Mr M. O. Moore, his former French teacher at St Francis Secondary School, Ikot Ataku, Eket, was more than a reunion. It was a public expression of gratitude to an educator whose influence had endured despite the passage of time and the demands of high office.

On Friday, October 16, 2026, Eno visited the veteran teacher at Okon Clan in Eket Local Government Area, recalling the period between 1975 and 1977 when Moore taught him French.

The encounter brought together two men whose lives had taken different paths since their days in the classroom: one had continued a career in education, while the other had risen to become governor of the state. Yet, in that moment, the distinction between teacher and student remained more significant than the difference in their present positions.

Eno’s gesture underscored a timeless truth: the influence of a good teacher often extends far beyond the classroom. Lessons in language, discipline and character can shape a student’s outlook for decades, sometimes becoming more evident as the years go by.

By seeking out his former teacher and thanking him in person, the governor offered a reminder that achievement should not erase the memory of those who contributed to one’s journey. Public office may change a person’s responsibilities and social standing, but it need not diminish the value of earlier relationships.

During the visit, Eno specifically acknowledged Moore’s contribution to his education, thanking him for the knowledge, discipline and values he imparted during his secondary school years. He also recalled that the veteran educator introduced him to French.

The recognition went beyond a general expression of respect for teachers. It identified an individual whose work had made a lasting impression and gave public visibility to a contribution that might otherwise have remained a private memory.

For younger generations, the reunion offered a lesson in humility and appreciation. Success in education, business, professional life or public service should not sever the connection between people and those who helped them along the way.

Moore’s emotional response reflected the significance of the moment. Describing his former student as someone who had risen to become the father of the state, the veteran teacher expressed delight at receiving the governor and commended his compassionate leadership.

He also offered prayers for Eno’s continued blessings, wisdom and good health before expressing his gratitude in French: “Merci beaucoup.”

The words provided a fitting conclusion to a reunion rooted in the same language that had connected the two men decades earlier. French, once a subject taught in a secondary school classroom, became part of the emotional expression of a relationship that had survived the passage of time.

The gathering also drew members of the school and wider community into the tribute. Professor Etiben Akpan welcomed the governor on behalf of the school community, while the alumni association president, Mr Samuel Uko, thanked him for honouring their former teacher.

The Clan Head of Okon, HRH Akpabio Ekpoton, also commended the visit to the rural community, describing it as a demonstration of humility and respect.

Their reactions showed how an apparently personal gesture could become a shared moment of recognition for an educator’s service and the enduring place of teachers in the life of a community.

The visit also provided an opportunity for Eno to restate his administration’s commitment to education in Akwa Ibom State.

Recalling the declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector, the governor reaffirmed his determination to raise educational standards and provide functional accommodation for secondary school teachers. He drew a comparison with facilities in the model primary schools established across the state’s 31 local government areas.

The commitment linked the personal tribute to a broader question about the status and welfare of teachers in the education system. If educators are expected to shape future generations, their working conditions, professional dignity and access to adequate facilities remain important considerations.

Yet, beyond the policy commitments and public commendations, the defining feature of the occasion was its simplicity.

Eno did not merely speak about the importance of teachers. He returned to meet one who had taught him nearly half a century earlier. The journey from the classroom of 1975–1977 to the meeting in October 2026 had not diminished the importance of that relationship.

For Akwa Ibom residents, the encounter offered a reminder that leadership is expressed not only through public projects, official decisions and policy announcements, but also through personal conduct and the values demonstrated in everyday relationships.

A teacher’s reward is not always measured in certificates, promotions or immediate public recognition. Sometimes, it comes decades later, when a former student returns to acknowledge the difference the teacher made.

By honouring Mr M. O. Moore, Governor Umo Eno turned a personal memory into a public tribute, affirming a simple but enduring principle: no level of achievement should make anyone forget those who helped shape the journey.
