The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has explained his absence at the funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari, which took place on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State.

Obi’s absence had raised questions on social media and among political observers, with some critics pointing to it as a snub. However, the former Anambra State governor clarified that logistical constraints, particularly the lack of available flights, made it impossible for him to attend the burial on the day it was held.

“It was difficult to come yesterday (Tuesday) because there was no flight,” Obi told Arise TV on Wednesday during his visit to Daura.
“Even if there was a flight, you couldn’t land in Katsina Airport. It was all closed, because there were a lot of dignitaries.”

Despite the setback, Obi traveled to Daura on Wednesday to personally commiserate with the family of the late President.

He emphasized that mourning continues beyond the day of burial and that his visit was in keeping with tradition and respect.

“Mourning continues until tomorrow. So, whoever comes today and tomorrow is still part of the mourning,” he added.

Obi’s visit underscores his continued engagement in national affairs and respect for past leaders, despite political differences.
