The Senate has urged the Federal Government to rebuild roads destroyed by flooding and erosion, provide emergency relief to displaced residents and assess damaged farmlands and livestock for compensation.
Lawmakers also called for urgent ecological restoration nationwide, with priority for erosion sites in Anambra, Ebonyi and Imo states.
The resolutions followed three motions by Senators Victor Umeh, Anthony Ani and Osita Izunaso during Wednesday’s plenary.
The Senate directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide food, potable water, temporary shelter and medical supplies to affected residents.
It urged the Ministry of Works to reconstruct damaged roads, restore access to isolated communities and improve drainage.
The Ministry of Environment was asked to conduct technical assessments and implement sustainable flood and erosion control measures.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security was asked to assess destroyed farmlands and livestock in Ebonyi State and provide emergency grants to farmers.
Committees on Environment, Works, and Ecology and Climate Change were mandated to inspect affected communities and report within one month.
Presenting the Anambra motion, Umeh said flooding and erosion had caused deaths, displaced families and destroyed homes and infrastructure.
He said at least four people had died, including a pregnant woman and a six-year-old pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, Awka.
Umeh named Ogidi, Obosi and Awka among the affected communities and called for urgent reconstruction of the Onitsha-Ogidi-Awka federal road.
Seconding, Ani cited flash floods that ravaged Ebonyi South in late September 2026, submerging homes, businesses and farmlands and killing crops and livestock. He urged immediate humanitarian aid and support for affected farmers.
Izunaso, in a separate motion on Imo West, warned that recurring floods and erosion continue to destroy homes, farms and roads, despite an earlier motion he presented in 2023.
He listed affected communities in Ideato North, Ideato South and Oguta, including Urualla, Obodoukwu, Osina, Oguta Amishi and Nkosi, and called for emergency intervention and a long-term rehabilitation programme.
During deliberations, the Senate extended the intervention to affected communities nationwide rather than only the South-East.
Lawmakers observed a minute’s silence for those who died in the disasters.
