    Murtala Adewale of The Guardian Emerges Chairman of NUJ Kano Correspondents’ Chapel

    Murtala Adewale, The Guardian correspondent in Kano, has been elected Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel in Kano State, following a tightly contested election on Tuesday.

    Adewale polled 17 votes to defeat his closest rival, Ahmad Sorondinki of ThisDay newspaper, who garnered 12 votes.

    Other elected officers include:
    Salihu Ali (Voice of Nigeria) – Assistant Secretary (defeated Khadija Aliyu of FRCN)

    Longtong Yakubu (Leadership Newspapers) – Auditor

    The following emerged unopposed: Yusuf Bala (VON) – Vice Chairman, Salim Umar Ibrahim (Daily Trust) – Secretary
    Bashir Bello (Vanguard) – Treasurer
    Ramatu Garba (News Agency of Nigeria) – Financial Secretary

    The results were announced by Chairman of the Credentials Committee, Fanen Ihyongo, who praised members for the peaceful and transparent process.

    Adewale, in his acceptance speech, promised to champion unity, capacity development, and welfare for members.
    “This victory is a call to service. Together, we’ll elevate professionalism and foster an inclusive, vibrant chapel,” he said.

    Mustapha Gambo, representing the NUJ State Council Chairman, Comrade Suleiman Dederi, handed certificates of return to the new executive and charged them to lead with integrity and fairness.
