***Urges Kano Govt to Immortalize Fallen Heroes

The Kogi State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of 22 athletes and officials from Kano State, who lost their lives in a fatal road accident while returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF) held in Ogun State.
In a condolence message signed by the Acting Secretary of Kogi SWAN, Mr. Olatunde Odimayo, and made available to journalists in Lokoja on Sunday, the association described the incident as a heartbreaking loss to the Nigerian sports community.
> “The entire SWAN family has been thrown into mourning by this devastating news. It is a tragedy not just for Kano State, but for the entire nation,” the statement read.
While commiserating with the Kano SWAN chapter, the bereaved families, and the Kano State Government, the association noted that the athletes had represented their state with dedication and pride at the festival, only to meet their untimely deaths on their way back home.
> “These were young, vibrant, and promising individuals who had competed with honour and determination. Their lives were cut short in a most painful and unfortunate way,” Odimayo said.
Kogi SWAN called on the Kano State Government to immortalize the fallen athletes, describing them as heroes who died in active service to their state.
“We urge the Kano State Government to take immediate steps to honour their memories. These fallen sports ambassadors deserve to be remembered for their sacrifice and dedication,” the statement urged.
The Kogi SWAN chapter extended its heartfelt prayers to the families of the deceased, wishing them strength and comfort in this difficult time.
It will be recalled that the 22-member Kano State contingent perished in a fatal accident on their way home from the 2025 Gateway Games, hosted by Ogun State, marking a sombre close to what had been a celebration of athletic excellence and national unity.
