EFCC Rebuked: Court Orders 24-Hour Release of Aisha Achimugu over Rights violation

In a bold affirmation of the rule of law, the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release embattled businesswoman Aisha Achimugu within 24 hours, citing a breach of her constitutional rights.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, who issued the ruling on Wednesday, also summoned the EFCC to appear before the court on May 2 to explain its compliance with the directive.

Achimugu was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, weeks after the EFCC accused her of jumping administrative bail in connection to a multi-billion naira investigation involving alleged money laundering, fraud, and illicit property acquisition.

However, her legal team insists the arrest was heavy-handed and premature, especially after she had been cooperating with prior summons. The court had earlier directed her to appear voluntarily and be brought before the bench—an order EFCC failed to fulfil before her latest detention.

The case is fast becoming a litmus test for the EFCC’s adherence to due process and the judiciary’s authority in safeguarding civil liberties.
