The Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has recorded a substantial increase in revenue collection since introducing an electronic payment system in February.
    According to Chief Revenue Officer,
Mr. Bitrus Jebida, the council has surpassed its collection for the previous year, with a significant surge in revenue.

The electronic payment system, introduced by the current administration, utilizes Remita to facilitate payments for levies and taxes. While initial technical issues arose, the council has since resolved them, and the system has proven effective.

Jebida attributed the success to the council’s engagement with technical partners and public enlightenment strategies. The council has also deployed staff to educate residents on the importance of revenue collection and its utilization.

To address tax evasion, the council has implemented measures such as sending reminders, engaging with taxpayers, and promoting public awareness through radio jingles. Jebida emphasized that taxation aims to generate revenue for better governance, not to harm businesses.

The council also negotiates with clients facing difficulties, offering flexible payment options while ensuring authenticity and transparency. Jebida urged business owners to verify the identity of revenue collectors to avoid impostors.

Overall, the electronic payment system has significantly improved revenue collection, enabling the council to enhance services and infrastructure in the area.
