The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has sought to turn the 2027 presidential election into a performance test for political parties, placing poverty, insecurity and Nigerians’ living conditions at the centre of its campaign agenda and unveiling a blueprint against which it says an SDP government should be judged.
The party’s presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, presented the document, titled “Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity: Governance & Accelerated Development – Blueprint of a New Nigeria, 2027–2031,” on Tuesday at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
The blueprint sets out the party’s proposed priorities for 2027–2031, including security, economic opportunity, social welfare, infrastructure and institutional reform.
Adebayo said the SDP wanted Nigerians to judge politicians not by the number of projects they announce or commission, but by whether government policies produce measurable improvements in citizens’ lives.
He said the party would therefore campaign against the problems confronting Nigerians rather than merely against its political opponents.
Among the issues identified were poverty, insecurity, unemployment, inadequate electricity, economic management and the rising cost of education.
“The success of our campaigns will be measured by how we communicate these issues and solutions to Nigerians, to believe the solutions that we bring and to trust that we have the competence, character and integrity to do as we have said when we get in there,” Adebayo said.
A major proposal in the document is to make measurable outcomes a central basis for assessing government performance.
The SDP proposes that the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy contained in Chapter II of the 1999 Constitution should play a more prominent role in government planning, budgeting and implementation.
Under the proposed framework, Ministries, Departments and Agencies would be expected to connect major programmes to specific constitutional objectives and report measurable results.
The party said the arrangement would give citizens clearer benchmarks for determining whether government promises had been fulfilled.
In effect, the SDP is presenting its blueprint as a public accountability framework: promises made before the election should become targets that citizens can subsequently use to assess the government.
Adebayo also set out specific economic targets, including a pledge to reduce petrol prices to N200 per litre within his first year in office.
He said the proposed target would be pursued through increased domestic refining and a revised framework for supplying crude oil to local refineries.
The blueprint also proposes measures aimed at reducing transportation and housing costs, as well as free education and healthcare as part of the party’s proposed social welfare programme.
Adebayo proposed free mandatory medical screening twice annually for Nigerians, arguing that greater emphasis on prevention and early detection could improve health outcomes and reduce the burden of illness.
Security also subject to results
On security, the SDP promised decisive action against terrorism, kidnapping, illegal mining and other forms of criminality.
Adebayo said an SDP administration would seek to reclaim territories controlled by terrorists and dismantle the economic networks sustaining criminal activity.
The party said its approach would combine security operations with measures addressing the economic and social conditions it believes can contribute to criminality.
The emphasis, however, remained on outcomes rather than declarations, with the SDP presenting improved security and living conditions as areas where Nigerians should ultimately be able to judge the performance of any government.
The SDP is positioning itself as an alternative political platform ahead of the 2027 elections under the slogan: “SDP… Progress! A New Nigeria is Possible.”
Adebayo said the blueprint was being placed before Nigerians and other stakeholders for scrutiny, inviting political actors, professionals, members of the diplomatic community, civil society organisations and the media to examine the party’s proposals.
With political activity building ahead of the 2027 elections, the SDP is seeking to shift the campaign conversation from who should govern to what government should deliver—and how citizens can hold it accountable when it fails to do so.
The blueprint, therefore, places the burden not only on the electorate to choose a government, but on the prospective government to provide clear targets against which its record can be measured.
