Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, says his political survival may be at stake in the 2027 presidential election, warning that opposition victory could expose him to reprisals.
Wike said he believes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi would target him if either of them defeats President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
The minister made the remarks while speaking about his continued support for Tinubu, stressing that the outcome of the election has become a major concern for him.
According to Wike, his decision to remain firmly behind Tinubu is influenced not only by political loyalty but also by his assessment of what could happen if the President loses power.
“I know they will come for my head,” Wike was quoted as saying, referring to the possibility of an opposition victory.
The former Rivers State governor said the 2027 election occupies his thoughts constantly because of the political consequences he believes could follow a change of government.
“Every day I contemplate the President’s re-election; it occupies my thoughts even while I eat,” he said.
Wike also reflected on the criticism and abuse he has received throughout his political career, saying he had been subjected to intense name-calling and attacks.
“I don’t recognise anyone in this country having been called names as much as I have,” he said.
His comments highlight the high stakes surrounding the 2027 presidential contest, particularly for politicians whose current alliances could be affected by a change in government.
Wike, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party, has remained an influential figure in Tinubu’s administration despite the President and the PDP being on opposing political platforms.
His position has continued to generate debate within political circles, with the 2027 election expected to intensify existing alliances, rivalries and calculations for political survival.
