Tony Elumelu, Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), has reportedly forgiven a young woman whose casual greeting to him recently sparked reactions on social media.
The young woman was among participants in the UBA Graduate Management Programme when she reportedly greeted the businessman with, “Good morning, Tony.”
The greeting attracted mixed reactions online. Some Nigerians criticised the young woman, saying she should have used a more respectful form of address. Others argued that the situation should be considered in the context of the event and possible differences in social and cultural settings.

The controversy appeared to take a different turn after Elumelu reportedly invited the young woman to another engagement, where they were seen together in a photograph.
The development suggests that the businessman may have chosen to move beyond the incident rather than allow it to affect the young woman’s future.
Elumelu’s reported gesture has also renewed discussions about leadership, humility, forgiveness and the importance of giving young people room to learn from mistakes.
The incident highlights how a simple misunderstanding can quickly attract public attention in the age of social media, while also showing the value of resolving disagreements without allowing them to define a person’s future.
