Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged politicians seeking elective offices in 2027 to show the character expected of leaders and keep their campaigns free from violence.
Obi spoke after signing the National Peace Accord for the 2027 presidential election alongside other candidates in Abuja.
He said the agreement should not remain a document on paper, but should guide the conduct of politicians and their supporters throughout the election period.
According to him, candidates must avoid inflammatory statements and control their supporters to prevent violence before, during and after the election.
“Leaders must eschew all forms of violent rhetoric and rein in their followers to do the same,” Obi said.
He said the 2027 election should be about finding solutions to Nigeria’s major problems, including insecurity, poverty, national disunity and the growing number of children who are out of school.
Obi also called on political supporters to respect the electoral process and accept the rules of democratic competition.
“Our supporters must see that we have all committed to free, fair, and credible elections based on issues and devoid of rancour,” he said.
The NDC candidate said those seeking public office must understand that leadership comes with responsibility and should be reflected in their behaviour.
“Those of us wishing to be addressed as ‘His Excellency’ must behave excellently,” he said.
Obi welcomed the commitment of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free, fair and credible election.
He also urged security agencies to remain neutral and avoid actions that could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
The former Anambra State governor appealed to his supporters to remain calm, peaceful and determined throughout the campaign.
He said Nigerians should see the 2027 election as an opportunity to choose leaders who can restore hope and move the country forward.
“A New Nigeria is POssible,” Obi said.
