At 70, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi’s political biography reads less like a single career than a passage through several Nigeria’s institutions — from the classroom and banking hall to the Kaduna Government House, the Senate and the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party.
It is this breadth of experience that the Northern Senators Forum has chosen to celebrate as the former Kaduna State governor marks his 70th birthday.
In a birthday tribute signed by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’adua, Chairman of the Forum on behalf of members in Abuja on Saturday, the forum described Makarfi as a teacher, banker, governor, senator, party leader and statesman, saying his seven decades had been defined by public service, humility and institutional contribution.
The tribute, titled **“70th Birthday Tribute to Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi: From Classroom Teacher to Statesman,”** described him as a “detribalised Nigerian” whose public life had extended beyond his political and geographical roots.
The journey began in education.
Before becoming a major political figure, Makarfi taught and later served as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Accounting at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, between 1987 and 1993.
The classroom was followed by the banking sector, where he rose to become Assistant General Manager of Nigeria Universal Bank.
He subsequently returned to public administration, serving as Commissioner of Finance in Kaduna State before making the decisive transition into electoral politics.
In 1999, Makarfi was elected governor of Kaduna State.
He remained in office for eight years, leaving Government House in 2007 after two terms.
The Northern Senators Forum described his tenure as a period of “steady and courageous leadership” and credited his administration with laying foundations in governance, peace-building and development.
But leaving the governor’s office did not mark the end of Makarfi’s political career.
It marked another transition.
From 2007 to 2015, he represented Kaduna North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, where the forum said he brought the experience of a former governor and the discipline of a former technocrat to legislative work.
“In the red chamber, you brought the same calm intellect, depth, and commitment to nation-building that defined your years as governor,” the senators said.
His political career later took him to the national leadership of the PDP at a period when the party was facing significant internal challenges.
As National Chairman, the forum said, Makarfi assumed the task of holding together a party struggling with competing interests and internal divisions.
“As National Chairman, you held the centre. You stabilized, you reconciled, and you reminded us that politics must be about people, about institutions, and about country — not just power,” it said.
For the Northern Senators Forum, however, Makarfi’s significance cannot be reduced to the offices he occupied.
The forum said his most enduring attribute was his ability to operate across Nigeria’s political, professional and regional divides.
It consequently described him as a “detribalised Nigerian”, stressing that his reputation was not confined to Makarfi or Kaduna State.
“At 70, you are rightly honoured as a detribalised Nigerian. Your name and your work are celebrated not only in Makarfi, not only in Kaduna, but across every corner of our country,” the senators said.
The tribute presented his career as a continuum — education providing the foundation, banking supplying professional experience, governance offering executive responsibility, the Senate providing legislative exposure and party leadership testing his ability to manage political differences.
As Makarfi enters his eighth decade, the forum said Nigeria could still benefit from the experience accumulated across those different phases of public life.
It urged him to continue serving as a source of counsel to younger politicians and public officials.
“Nigeria still needs your voice — calm in crisis, firm in principle, and generous in counsel,” the senators said.
The forum prayed for continued wisdom, strength and good health for the former governor, while expressing hope that his 70th year would open another chapter of national contribution.
For the senators, Makarfi’s birthday is therefore more than a celebration of age. It is an occasion to reflect on a public career that has crossed the classroom, corporate Nigeria, state government, the National Assembly and party politics — and on the experience that such a journey has accumulated.
