The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has paid glowing tribute to Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on his 92nd birthday, describing him as the nation’s enduring conscience whose unwavering commitment to justice and democracy has shaped Nigeria’s moral and political landscape for decades.

In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party said Soyinka’s remarkable life has been defined by fearless advocacy, intellectual excellence and an uncompromising defence of truth, earning him admiration both within Nigeria and across the world.

According to the SDP, the playwright, essayist and human rights advocate has remained one of the country’s most respected public voices, consistently speaking against injustice and championing democratic values regardless of prevailing political circumstances.

The party noted that Soyinka’s influence extends beyond literature, saying his interventions on national issues have continued to inspire generations of Nigerians to pursue justice, accountability and responsible leadership.

It also recalled his historic emergence in 1986 as the first African recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, describing the achievement as a defining moment that elevated Nigeria’s cultural and intellectual standing on the global stage.

The SDP said Soyinka’s enduring legacy lies not only in his literary accomplishments but also in his lifelong dedication to defending human dignity and promoting a more just society.

The party further highlighted its long-standing connection with the Nobel Laureate through its National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, whom it described as one of Soyinka’s protégés, noting that his ideals continue to inspire the party’s commitment to democratic governance and national renewal.

As Soyinka marks his 92nd birthday, the SDP prayed for his continued good health and longevity, expressing hope that Nigeria and the international community would continue to benefit from his wisdom, courage and unwavering commitment to humanity.
