The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Peter Obi, on Wednesday made an unannounced tour of voter registration centres in Anambra State, using the visit to rally Nigerians to register to vote ahead of the 2027 general election.
Obi, who described voter registration as the foundation of democracy and good governance, visited the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) centres at the Civic Centre, Nibo, and Nrijiofor Primary School, Nri, shortly after arriving in the state.
The former Anambra State governor interacted with prospective voters, commended those already participating in the exercise, and urged millions of eligible Nigerians yet to register not to miss the opportunity to secure their voting rights.
“I was pleased to see Nigerians registering to vote. I took the opportunity to commend those who had turned out and to encourage every eligible citizen to do the same,” Obi said.
He stressed that meaningful political change begins long before Election Day, insisting that voter registration is the first step toward electing accountable leaders.
“The journey to good governance does not begin on Election Day; it begins with voter registration. Registering to vote is not just a civic responsibility—it is an investment in the Nigeria we all desire,” he said.
Obi also appealed to registered voters to mobilise others by encouraging family members, friends, neighbours and colleagues to participate in the ongoing exercise before the registration deadline.
According to him, broad voter participation remains critical to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring the emergence of responsive and accountable leadership.
“Every registered voter strengthens our democracy and brings us one step closer to building the secure, united, productive and prosperous Nigeria we all seek,” he added.
Obi concluded his message with his signature refrain, “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
His surprise visit comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) intensifies the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise ahead of the 2027 general election, with political parties and civil society organisations stepping up campaigns to encourage eligible Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
