The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and Transparency International Nigeria (TI-Nigeria) have expressed deep grief over the passing of Daily Independent Newspapers Group Business Editor, Sylvester Enoghase, describing his death as a significant loss to Nigeria’s media and accountability space.
In a condolence statement, CISLAC Executive Director and Head of TI-Nigeria, Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, said Enoghase was more than a journalist, noting that he was a principled professional committed to truth, ethical reporting, and public-interest journalism.
Rafsanjani said the late journalist, who also served as Labour Editor of Daily Independent, distinguished himself through consistent and insightful coverage of economic, business, and labour issues that helped shape informed national conversations.
He noted that Enoghase’s reporting contributed to strengthening democratic accountability by giving visibility to workers’ rights, governance concerns, and social justice issues often underreported in mainstream discourse.
According to him, the deceased’s professionalism, humility, and integrity earned him respect across the media industry and among civil society actors who engaged with him on governance and transparency matters.
Rafsanjani also recalled Enoghase’s leadership role as former Chairman of the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN), where he was credited with promoting collaboration and raising standards among journalists covering labour affairs.
He added that the late journalist maintained open and constructive engagement with civil society organisations, consistently demonstrating a willingness to advance discussions on accountability, transparency, and citizens’ welfare.
Describing his passing as painful and untimely, Rafsanjani said Enoghase’s contributions to journalism and national development would remain a lasting reference point for the profession.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the management and staff of Daily Independent Newspapers, members of LAWAN, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and the wider media community.
Rafsanjani prayed for the peaceful repose of Enoghase’s soul and for strength for all who mourn his loss.
