Kano’s vibrant film industry, Kannywood, has attracted international attention as diplomats from the European Union and several European countries visited the city to witness how the creative sector is generating employment, promoting education and shaping social values across northern Nigeria.
The high-powered delegation, led by European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, toured Kano Film Village and engaged with filmmakers, actors, producers and regulators in a visit that highlighted the increasing recognition of Nigeria’s creative economy as a powerful driver of development.
Joining Ambassador Mignot were ambassadors and senior diplomatic representatives from Denmark, Spain, Italy, France, Czechia, Finland, Belgium and Austria under the Team Europe initiative.
The delegation was welcomed by the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board, Alhaji Abba El-Mustapha, and the Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation, Ali Nuhu, who provided insights into the remarkable growth and impact of Kannywood.
A major highlight of the visit was the delegation’s observation of the production of Hindatu, a film centered on a young girl’s determination to pursue education and become a medical doctor despite family pressure to marry early. The storyline resonated strongly with the diplomats, illustrating how entertainment can be used to challenge harmful social norms while promoting positive values.
For the visitors, the film demonstrated the unique power of storytelling to influence attitudes and encourage social progress.
“Stories have the power to inspire change,” Ambassador Mignot said during the visit. “Films that promote education, opportunity and inclusion can spark important conversations and encourage positive change within communities.”
He stressed that creative industries are increasingly becoming important economic assets, particularly in countries with large youth populations.
“Creative industries are not only about culture. They are also about jobs, skills, entrepreneurship and creating opportunities for young people,” he said.
According to him, Nigerian youths continue to display extraordinary creativity and talent, while industries such as Kannywood are helping transform that talent into sustainable livelihoods and economic opportunities.
The visit offered Team Europe a firsthand look at an industry that has evolved far beyond entertainment into a significant source of employment and social influence.
Speaking on the industry’s development, Alhaji Abba El-Mustapha noted that Kannywood has become an important platform for promoting positive social values while supporting thousands of jobs across the creative sector.
He disclosed that the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board has approved more than 10,000 films over the years and continues to support the industry through professional training, workshops and stakeholder engagement initiatives.
“Our role is not only regulatory,” he explained. “We also work with filmmakers to strengthen professional standards, support capacity development and ensure that films contribute positively to society.”
The delegation also toured Kano Film Village, a production facility developed by broadcaster and filmmaker Abdullaziz Dansmall. The facility was created to provide filmmakers with a dedicated production environment capable of improving efficiency and reducing production costs.
Dansmall narrated how the project grew from humble beginnings into one of the industry’s most ambitious infrastructure investments.
“Our first major production was Gidang Haya. We used the revenue from that project to build little by little, expanding the facility over time,” he said.
“Our long-term ambition is to transform the site into a fully developed film village capable of supporting larger productions.”
Industry stakeholders say investments in facilities such as Kano Film Village are crucial to improving production quality, attracting investors and positioning Kannywood for greater competitiveness within Africa’s growing entertainment market.
Ali Nuhu, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated actors and filmmakers, emphasized the industry’s substantial economic contribution. He cited research indicating that film production is the second-largest source of youth employment in Kano State after agriculture.
According to him, the industry supports an extensive network of economic activities beyond filmmaking itself, including costume production, transportation, hospitality, catering, equipment rental, makeup artistry, marketing and digital distribution.
“The impact of Kannywood extends far beyond the screen,” he noted.
Nuhu also pointed to challenges confronting the sector, particularly in distribution and access to modern production infrastructure. However, he observed that the industry has demonstrated resilience by adapting to digital platforms following the decline of traditional DVD sales.
The transition to online streaming and digital content distribution has opened new opportunities for filmmakers and audiences alike, enabling Kannywood productions to reach viewers across Nigeria and beyond.
The visit comes at a time when the European Union is deepening cultural cooperation between Africa and Europe through programmes such as the Africa-Europe Partnerships for Culture, a €30 million initiative that supports artist mobility, cultural spaces and creative collaboration.
The programme reflects a growing global understanding that culture and creative industries are not merely sources of entertainment but strategic tools for economic growth, innovation and social development.
For Kannywood practitioners, the visit by Team Europe represents more than diplomatic engagement. It is a recognition of the industry’s growing importance as a vehicle for job creation, youth empowerment and social transformation.
As international partnerships expand and investment in creative talent continues to grow, stakeholders believe Kannywood is well positioned to play an even greater role in shaping opportunities and inspiring positive change across northern Nigeria.
