The Executive Director of the Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR), Comrade Idris Miliki Abdul, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to urgently publish maps of newly restored constituencies across affected states following a recent court judgment.
Abdul made the call in a statement issued on Thursday in Lokoja, stressing that the maps would facilitate the effective implementation of the judgment and serve as a guide for stakeholders ahead of future electoral activities in the affected areas.
He urged INEC to ensure the full restoration of all previously suppressed constituencies, describing the court ruling as a landmark decision that would strengthen justice, fairness, and democratic representation across the country.
According to him, the judgment represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic development by ensuring that communities previously denied adequate representation are given their rightful place in the electoral process.
Abdul commended the judiciary for what he described as a courageous and historic pronouncement that upholds the principles of equity, inclusion, and good governance.
The rights advocate also praised Hon. Salman Idris, the member representing Kabba/Bunu-Ijumu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, for sponsoring the motion that brought national attention to the issue.
He further acknowledged the efforts of state governments, litigants, civil society groups, and other stakeholders whose contributions, he said, culminated in the successful restoration of the constituencies.
Abdul equally lauded the media for consistently highlighting the matter and keeping it in public discourse throughout the advocacy and legal processes.
The CHRCR Executive Director urged political parties to ensure peaceful, transparent, and credible primary elections in the affected constituencies whenever the electoral process commences.
He noted that responsible conduct by political actors would help consolidate the gains of the court judgment and promote effective representation.
Abdul reiterated the need for INEC to act without delay by producing and making available detailed constituency maps to eliminate confusion and provide clarity for voters, political parties, and electoral officials.
He expressed optimism that the implementation of the judgment would deepen democratic governance, enhance electoral transparency, and guarantee more inclusive representation for citizens in the affected areas.
