The Niger State Government has debunked reports of alleged bandit kidnappings in parts of the state, describing the viral claims as false, misleading, and the handiwork of mischief makers seeking to create panic and discredit ongoing security efforts.
The clarification followed widespread fear on Wednesday that led to the abrupt shutdown of schools in Minna and other parts of the state capital.
In a statement on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon. Obed Nana, said there was “no cause for alarm,” assuring residents that Niger State remains safe, secure, and conducive for learning and business activities.
He explained that the government was compelled to respond after fake reports circulated on social media alleging attacks on schools in Bosso, Kpakungu, Sabon-Wuse, Lambata, and surrounding communities.
According to him, joint verification carried out by the Ministry of Information and Orientation, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the Niger State Police Command, and other security agencies confirmed that no such incidents occurred.
“The reported incidents did not occur,” the statement emphasized, adding that the claims were deliberately designed to spread fear and unnecessary anxiety among residents.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting students, teachers, and school communities, noting that it is working closely with security agencies, school administrators, and community leaders to strengthen security around educational institutions across the state.
Parents and guardians were urged to remain calm and continue sending their children to school, as adequate security measures have been put in place.
Meanwhile, normal academic activities resumed across Minna on Thursday, with all previously shut-down schools reopening.
Security presence was also reinforced in the metropolis, as police patrol vehicles were stationed at strategic locations. The Commissioner of Police further directed divisional officers to collaborate closely with school authorities to ensure sustained protection in and around schools.
