ADC candidate Kpautagi demands accountability over ₦4.9bn Mokwa flood funds usage

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Niger State, Dr. Mohammed K. Kpautagi, has called on Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago to publicly account for alleged ₦4.9 billion donations received for victims of the Mokwa flood disaster, amid growing concerns over the condition of displaced persons one year after the tragedy.
Kpautagi made the call in a statement issued in Minna on Tuesday, describing the situation of the flood victims as “pathetic and worrisome,” and alleging that there has been little evidence of meaningful resettlement despite the volume of funds reportedly received.
He said the funds, which he claimed included contributions from federal and state governments, as well as individuals and corporate organisations, were meant strictly for relief and rehabilitation of victims, not for private or unrelated expenditure.
According to him, the federal government alone reportedly contributed up to ₦2 billion, alongside other donations totalling ₦4.9 billion, which he said should have significantly improved the living conditions of the displaced persons.
“It is disheartening that one year after the people were displaced, nothing on ground suggests proper resettlement,” he said, insisting that he had obtained documents detailing contributions from 37 donors.
Kpautagi urged the state government to provide a transparent breakdown of how the funds were managed, stressing that accountability was necessary given the continued hardship faced by victims.
He argued that governance is centred on the welfare of the people and that no administration should ignore the plight of displaced communities while public funds meant for their relief remain unaccounted for.
The ADC candidate also pledged that, if elected, he would investigate and recover every kobo earmarked for the resettlement of flood victims and prioritise their rehabilitation.
“It is regrettable and unfortunate that after receiving over ₦4.9 billion, the government has not adequately addressed the immediate needs of the Mokwa people,” he added.
