The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fired an early political warning shot ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Jigawa State, clearing Mustapha Sule Lamido as its lone aspirant and setting the stage for a renewed battle against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lamido, who contested the 2023 governorship election on the PDP platform, successfully passed the party’s screening exercise at the PDP national headquarters, Legacy House Annex, Abuja, ahead of the governorship primary fixed for May 21.
As the only aspirant screened by the party, the development effectively hands him a smooth path to securing the PDP ticket for the 2027 race against the incumbent governor, Umar Namadi.
The early endorsement is being viewed within political circles as a strategic move by the PDP to quickly unite its structure, avoid internal battles, and begin mobilising ahead of what could become one of Jigawa’s most fiercely contested elections in recent years.
Speaking after the screening exercise, Lamido framed his ambition as part of a broader push by a new generation of politicians seeking to redefine leadership and restore public confidence in governance.
According to him, the growing wave of defections by politicians across party lines exposes the absence of ideology and conviction in Nigeria’s political space.
He said leadership must be driven by principles, service, and commitment to the people rather than personal survival or political convenience.
Lamido insisted that the PDP remains the most viable opposition platform capable of responding to the frustrations of Nigerians facing economic hardship, unemployment, and insecurity.
The former governorship candidate pointed to the over 400,000 votes secured by the PDP in the last election as evidence that the party remains a major political force in Jigawa State despite the APC’s hold on power.
He expressed confidence that growing public dissatisfaction and stronger grassroots mobilisation would improve the PDP’s chances in 2027.
Political observers say the party’s decision to rally early around Lamido may signal a shift in strategy aimed at presenting a united opposition front well ahead of the election season.
The development also places pressure on the APC government in Jigawa, as attention gradually shifts toward the political calculations, alliances, and voter sentiments that could shape the 2027 governorship contest.
