Power Projects Scandal Ends in 75-Year Jail Term for Ex-Minister

Nigeria’s long-running battle against corruption recorded a major twist on Wednesday as former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, was sentenced to 75 years imprisonment over the diversion of billions meant for the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric projects.
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, found Mamman guilty on 12 counts linked to money laundering and the mismanagement of about ₦22 billion allocated for critical electricity infrastructure.
The court ruled that the sentences would run consecutively and ordered the forfeiture of recovered assets to the Federal Government, alongside the refund of outstanding diverted funds.
The conviction is being seen as one of the most far-reaching judgments connected to Nigeria’s troubled power sector and anti-corruption drive.
