Former Jigawa Lawmaker Reportedly Dies in Kidnappers’ Custody After Ransom Payment

A former federal lawmaker from Jigawa State, Abba Anas Adamu, has reportedly died while in the custody of suspected kidnappers, despite the payment of a N50 million ransom by his family.
Adamu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, was said to have been abducted alongside his political associate, Ali Tukur Gantsa, along the Abuja–Kaduna Highway while travelling from Kano to Abuja for a political meeting.
According to a family source, the abductors initially demanded N200 million for the release of the victims before negotiations reportedly reduced the ransom to N50 million.
The source disclosed that the victims were allegedly taken into a bush around Jere, where they were held for several days. After the ransom payment, the kidnappers reportedly released Gantsa but later dumped Adamu’s lifeless body on the outskirts of a town.
Family sources said the late politician had been battling asthma and hypertension and was without his medication during the period of captivity, a situation believed to have worsened his condition.
The incident has thrown members of the ADC in Jigawa and political associates into mourning, with many describing Adamu as a grassroots politician known for humility and integrity.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official statement from the ADC leadership in Jigawa State. However, sources said Gantsa and the remains of the deceased were being conveyed to Kano for burial arrangements.
