Thousands of supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and loyalists of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Monday took to the streets of Bauchi in a show of solidarity following his defection to the Allied People’s Movement (APM).
The governor had earlier, on Saturday, formally announced his exit from the PDP, a party he once chaired at the governors’ level for about two years. He attributed his decision to what he described as unavoidable political circumstances, while insisting he still holds the party in high regard.
According to him, the move followed extensive consultations with his political allies and supporters, culminating in a “strategic realignment” aimed at strengthening his political base ahead of future elections. He said the choice of APM was driven by the need to secure electoral success and ensure sustained governance delivery in Bauchi State and beyond.
“The APM offers us a viable platform to organise effectively, mobilise our supporters, and present a coherent and credible alternative to the people,” he said, adding that due diligence had been carried out on the party to ensure it was free from legal or structural complications that could hinder participation.
Meanwhile, during a reception rally held on Monday, the Director-General of the Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed Vanguard (BAMV), Mohammed Abubakar Jibo, praised the governor’s decision, describing it as courageous and rooted in patriotism.
He said Bala Mohammed remained a selfless leader who prioritises development over personal political interest, adding that the defection was motivated by a desire for continuity in governance and sustainable development beyond 2027.
The rally ended with renewed pledges of loyalty from supporters, signaling a strong political shift in Bauchi State following the governor’s move from the PDP to the APM.
