Bassa Peace Football Tournament Unites Communities, Spurs Youth Engagement

The Bassa Local Government Area has come alive with football fever as the Peace Football Championship kicks off, drawing teams, fans, and community leaders in a spirited effort to promote unity and reconciliation following recent ethnic tensions in the area.
The tournament, which began on April 20, 2026, features ten football clubs drawn from the three districts of Bassa LGA. It is designed as a grassroots peace-building initiative, using sports as a tool to foster inter-ethnic harmony, youth engagement, and community healing.
The championship was made possible through the donation of a trophy and sponsorship support by Abuja-based philanthropist and management consultant, Dr. Abdul Baba Bala, an indigene of Idah in Kogi State. His intervention has been widely praised as a timely effort to redirect youth energy toward positive and productive activities.
Chairman of Bassa LGA, Mr. Theophilus Daruwana Adama, described the tournament as a “peace carnival,” noting that it goes beyond competition to promote social cohesion and economic activity across communities.
He commended Dr. Bala and partner community groups for initiating what he described as the first large-scale peace-driven football event in the history of the local government.
“This tournament is not just about football; it is about rebuilding trust, restoring unity, and strengthening the social fabric of Bassa,” he said, adding that local businesses have also recorded increased patronage since the competition began.
The chairman urged residents to remain committed to peace and support ongoing development efforts under the state government’s broader agenda for rural transformation and youth empowerment.
Organizers say the tournament has already begun to energize communities, with local traders, food vendors, and small businesses benefiting from the steady flow of spectators and teams.
On the pitch, the competition has been intense. Ogba United FC recorded a 3–1 win over Young Stars FC of Gbechi, while Koriko FC defeated Ankura FC by the same margin. Oguma Young Stars secured a 2–0 victory over Ayede community team, and Sheria FC also advanced with a 2–0 win over Akakana FC.
Attention now shifts to the semi-finals, where Ogba United FC will face Flying Jets of Odenyi, while Oguma FC takes on Gbechi FC in what promises to be tightly contested fixtures.
With cash prizes of ₦100,000 for the winner and ₦50,000 for the runner-up, alongside medals for outstanding players, the tournament is expected to grow in intensity as more teams express interest in joining future editions.
Stakeholders, including youth leaders and community heads, have called for sustained sponsorship and government support to transform the championship into an annual peace and sports development platform, warning that consistent youth engagement remains key to preventing future unrest in the area.
